2000 highlights:
was a candidate for the comeback player of the year award after finishing
1-2, 4.50 in 20 relief apps for the reds...was nominated for the tony
conigliaro award, presented annually to a major league player who has
overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and
courage that were trademarks of the boston red sox outfielder...spent
most of the 1999 season on the disabled list, first with an anxiety disorder
and then with a torn ligament in his right elbow...on 7/6/99 had surgery
to repair the torn ligament in that elbow but returned to the major leagues
on 7/19/00...began the season on the disabled list while recovering from
that "tommy john" surgery...on 5/29 was reinstated from the
dl and outrighted to class a dayton, then joined class aaa louisville
on 6/5...at dayton and louisville combined to go 1-2, 5.70 in 20g and
5 starts...on 7/19 was promoted from louisville...the next night at hou
retired all 6 batters faced (2k, 14 pitches) in his first major league
appearance since april 1999...while with cin posted a 3.33era in his first
19g, then in his last appearance of the season, on 9/30 at stl, allowed
4er in 1ip to finish at 4.50...7 times pitched 2.0 scoreless innings...retired
the first batter 12-20 times (60%)...stranded all 3 inherited baserunners...did
not have a save opportunity...the reds went 8-12 when he pitched...did
not allow a run until his sixth appearance, on 8/5 vs fla...in the 6-4
win at cubs on 8/11 threw a scoreless inning for his first major league
victory since 9/4/97 at sd...on 8/20 vs phi threw a career-high 3.0 innings
for the second time (8/31/92 for atl at nym)...on 8/30 threw 2.0 scoreless
innings in his first appearance in atlanta since leaving the braves...on
9/2 vs mtl allowed a pinch-hit hr to andy tracy...on 9/14 vs mil tied
