fifth in the all-time yankee list (500 games or more) with a .322 carer
batting average...trails only hall-of-famer babe ruth (.349), lou gehrig
(.340), earle combs (.325), and joe dimaggio (.325)...recorded his third
streight 200 hit season with a fourth-inning single on 9/30 at baltimore
(also recorded 203 hits in 1998 and a league-leading 219 hits in 1999)...is
only the third yankee to compile three consecutive 200-hit seasons (joining

8/6-9/18...was the longest such streak by a yankee since jeter reached
base safely in 53 straight games in 1999; it was the fourth longest on
the season in the majors (behind la\s shawn green, 53, san diego's phil
nevin, 49, and cleveland\s manny ramirez, 49)...tied a carer high with
4 hits (14th time) and was 4-for-5 in 9/22 loss vs. detroit...hit 3 run
hr in 6th inning, tied a career high (15th time) with four hits for a
second consecutive game and was 4-for-5 with 3r and 4rbi in 9/23 win vs.
detroit...reached the 1000 hit plateau with a fifth inning single and
was 3-for-4 with 1rbi in 9/25 loss vs. detroit...at 26 he became the second
youngest yankee to accomplish the feat (behind only mickey mantle who
was 25 when he accomplished the feat in 1957).

school, where he hit .508 (30-59) with 4 hr, 23 rbi, 21 bb and 1 k in
23 games as a senior...was 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts, had a .831
slugging percentage and a .637 on-base percentage...hit .557 with 7 hr
as a junior...was named 1992 high school player-of-the-year by the american
baseball coaches association...his "turn 2 foundation," established
in 1996, was formed to support and create activities and programs designed
to prevent and treat teenage substance abuse...was the recipient of the
joan payson award for community service in 1997, presented annually by
the new york chapter of the bbwaa...received the new york press photographers\
annual "good guy" award for 1998...was the recipient of the
joe dimaggio "toast of the town" award in 1999, presented annually
