2000 highlights:
was 19-9, with a 4.35era in 32 games/32 games started.. his 88 wins over
the last five seasons (1996-2000) are the third most in the majors during
that span (behind only pedro martinez, 90; and greg maddux, 90).. earned
his 100th career win on 9/24 vs. detroit, becoming the 15th yankee to
record 100 career wins and the first since ron guidry in 1982 - at 100-54,
only four active pitchers had fewer losses at the time of their 100th
wins (dwight gooden, 100-37; mike mussina, 100-43; roger clemens, 100-47
and pedro martinez, 100-49 (is 15th on the yankees\ all-time wins list
with 100 (needs nine wins to tie spud chandler and fritz peterson--each
with 109-for 13th place.. did not allow a home run in his last eight starts
(49.12ip) and only one in his last 10 starts (65.21ip).. allowed only
1hr to left-handed batters in 2000 (to robin ventura, ny mets, 6/10 at
yankee stadium).. was placed on the 15-day disabled list on 4/13 (retroactive
to 4/8) with a strained muscle on the left side of his back - was reinstated
on 4/26 and pitched five shutout innings vs. minnesota (3h, 1bb, 4k),
but did not receive the decision in a 2-0 yankees\ win.. earned his fourth
win in five decisions and allowed a career-low two hits while registering
his 15th career complete game-and first since 8/19/98 at minnesota-a yankees\
4-1 win on 5/29 vs. oakland at yankee stadium - allowed only run on ninth
inning randy velarde homer... on 7/25 at baltimore, snapped his season-high
two game losing streak, throwing seven shutout innings in a 19-1 yankees\
victory.. on 8/4 vs. seattle notched his 12th win of the season despite
allowing a season-high 11h and 5er (7.01p, 4bb, 4k, 1hr) - with the victory,
became only the seventh pitcher in the last 40 years to record at least
12 wins in each of his first six major league seasons (was 12-9 in 1995;
21-8 in 1996; 18-7 in 1997, 16-11 in 1998 and 14-11 in 1999).. won a career-high
seven straight starts from 7/25 at baltimore through 8/24 vs. texas...
on 8/29 at seattle recorded the loss-snapping his career-high seven game
win streak (7.1ip, 7h, 4r, 4er, 1bb, 4k) - left the game with 3-1 lead
and bases loaded in the eighth (grand slam by edgar martinez off nelson
gave mariners 5-3 lead)... in his last start of the season on 9/29 at
baltimore, lasted only 1.1ip and allowed 9er (6h, 4bb, 2k) - was his shortest
outing since 9/5/97 vs. baltimore, when he lasted only 1.0+ inning after
being hit by a cal ripken line drive in the second - was his shortest
non-injury exit since 4/20/96 at baltimore when he also went 1.0+ inning
- the nine earned runs allowed were the second most of his career (allowed
10er in 2.2ip on 7/30/96 at texas).
personal:
was selected by the yankees in the 22nd round of the june 1990 free-agent
draft, but chose to attend san jacinto (tx) junior college...was eventually
signed by joe robison on 5/25/91...graduated from deer park (tx) high
school...was honored by the new york sports photographers with the "good
guy" award for 1996 and by the houston chapter of the bbwaa as the
"greater houston major league player-of-the-year"...received
special recognition award for the rbi program in 1996.
